PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a protein produced by both normal and cancerous prostate cells. A blood test measures PSA levels to assess prostate health. While PSA can be a sign of prostate cancer, many non-cancerous factors can raise it:
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) — non-cancerous enlargement
- Prostatitis — inflammation or infection
- Urinary tract infection
- Recent ejaculation or vigorous exercise (especially cycling)
- Recent urologic procedures or catheter use
- Prostate cancer
