What does "without contrast" mean?
Some CT scans use a dye (contrast) given through an IV to highlight blood vessels and tissues. A CT without contrast skips the dye. The scan is done with no IV, no needle, and no fasting.
Why did my urologist order a CT scan without contrast?
A CT without contrast is commonly used to look for kidney and ureter stones, to check on known stones, and to evaluate other urologic concerns. It shows stones and the overall structure of the urinary tract very clearly without the need for dye.
How long does a CT scan take?
The actual scan is usually only a few minutes. Because there is no IV placement, total time at the imaging center — including check-in and the scan itself — is typically shorter than for a scan with contrast.
Is a CT scan safe?
CT scans use a small dose of X-ray radiation. The benefit of an accurate diagnosis far outweighs the small risk in nearly all situations. We always use the lowest dose needed to answer the clinical question.
Will I feel anything during the scan?
No. The scan itself is painless, and there is no IV or dye, so you will not feel any warmth or notice a metallic taste. You only need to lie still and follow the breathing instructions.
When will I get my results?
A radiologist typically reviews your scan within 24–48 hours and sends the report to your urologist. You will go over the findings with your care team at your follow-up visit.
